I thought about kicking off Music Monday with a general post about Streetlight Manifesto, one of my favorite bands of all time, and a group whose music was important to me during a formative time in my life, but to start off simple, I decided to do a post just about their tune “The Saddest Song.”

This song really highlights one of the things that I find so appealing in a lot of ska music: It’s an upbeat, hopeful song with some kind of depressing lyrics. (I’ll link the lyrics at the end of the post so you can read for yourself.) It’s a song about being worn down and beaten and having nothing left in the gas tank, but still needing to fight. But it’s also a song about doing what you have to do through all the hard times, and having no regrets because of it. Combined with the fast beats and busy horns that ska and especially Streetlight do so well, the overall effect is definitely one of defiance, and that really appeals to me in a musical context.
