Music Monday #9 – Hello

Let’s rock another week.

The Cat Empire is an Australian ska band. As you can hear in this song they call upon some latin and jazz type influences in their music, which creates this very unique sound. This is another one of my “I dare you not to be pumped up by the opening riff” songs. If shrill horns aren’t your thing I can see how maybe this doesn’t thrill you, but otherwise, no excuse, this stuff is awesome. Enjoy, my Minions.

In My Dreams

So, I’m super interested in dreams. I’m interested generally in the way brains work, (Seriously, this is one of those topics that I can, and will with very little provocation, talk your ear off about for nearly forever.) and dreaming is an especially interesting part of that. So, when something unusual happens in my dreams (More unusual, that is, dreams being what they are.) it’s something that I am curious about and occupies a lot of my mindspace. I want to tell you about one of these things.

First, some background. My wife and I aren’t planning on having children for a couple of years, but baby names are a frequent topic of conversation in our home. I’ve come to the conclusion that this isn’t so much about naming babies as it is about the fact that we both like words a lot, and that naming things is an interesting and consistent application of this fascination. So, dreams, again, being what they are, it’s not uncommon for me to dream a baby name. It’s also common for these names to be… strange.

The other background point, and the topic relevant dream phenomenon, is the fact that I often have reoccurring items or themes in my dreams. In the weird nebulousness of dreaming these can sometimes be constant themes, or they can just be a subtle part of the dream. And dreams still being what they are, this sometimes means that I’m not sure exactly where the thing was in the dream, but I am certain that it was there.

In light of these two bits of info, it may interest you to know that almost every dream I’ve had for the past week or so has in some way involved my child Orange. So, that’s special.

That’s all for today, Minions. Do you remember your dreams? Any particularly weird ones you’d like to share with the class? See you in the comments.

Music Monday #8 – Party Down

Hope you folks had a good weekend, here’s an upbeat start for your week.

If you ever have a chance to see Reel Big Fish live I highly recommend it. Even if this isn’t exactly your cup of tea in music, the Fish are so much fun to watch on stage that I guarantee you’ll have a good time. I especially like this particular tune, because it reminds me of a great gag that the Fish do at their live shows where they repeat a section of a song over and over in different musical genres. It’s pretty impressive, and just tremendously fun.

Anyway, Party Down is a super upbeat tune that I defy you not to at least smile at. The lyrics are… weird, to say the least. (And nonsensical to say the most.) All in all, it’s a good way to kick off another fine week. See you Wednesday.

Monday was Valentine’s day. My wife and I don’t celebrate the holiday, but we do sometimes make fun of it.

I don’t know if you’ve seen this Jane Seymour jewelry collection, but it’s not great. Basically, it’s two hearts stuck together at the pointy end. If you’re still having trouble picturing it, maybe my wife’s nickname for it will give you a better mental image. She calls it the “Boobbutt necklace.” It’s an evocative mental image, you must admit.

On Valentine’s day, notable vlogger John Green (of Vlogbrothers fame, it’s great stuff, you should watch it, their channel is here) posted a video in which he pictured one of the above necklaces, and remarks that his wife refers to it as “Boobs ‘n Butt,” a remarkably similar nickname to the one my wife gives it. So, I showed my wife the video, and she loved it. It made her day. She said it was the best Valentine’s day present she’d ever received.

I got the love of my life a video of someone making fun of a necklace that she also makes fun of in the same way for Valentine’s Day. Top that.

Music Monday #7 – Gone

Another cover this week. There’s some stuff before and after the song, but it’s in there.

People who read my blog(Do you guys have a name? Do you want a name? I don’t know.), let me introduce you to Julia Nunes. The song being covered here is “Gone” by Ben Folds. (Which is a terrific tune in its own right.) Julia is one of the artists getting famous just by posting songs on YouTube, a trend i find incredibly delicious. I don’t have a lot to say for the song, honestly. If you’ve listened to it and you aren’t currently wondering how she’s managed to use her voice turn butterscotch pudding in to sounds and it’s incredible and wow then I probably don’t have any more information to impart on you, and this was a weird sentence.

I hope you had a good weekend blog reading people. (Seriously, if you guys want a nick name or something, tell me in the comments.) See you Wednesday.

Imperial Stormtroopers are the galaxy’s most elite fighting force, trained in highly lethal inanimate object and civilian elimination techniques. If faced with an Imperial Stormtrooper, it’s important not to panic. Simply join the Rebellion, or become a protagonist, and you should have no trouble avoiding a messy and inconsequential death.

See you on Monday!

So there was some talk a couple weeks ago about having me try to learn to do something over the course of a month, and I think that this is a good plan. I like learning new things, but I tend to skew towards knowledge rather than skillsets. My theory is that you all can brainstorm below, I’ll put up a poll with the suggestions next week, and then you’ll get weekly updates on my progress learning the thing you have made me learn.

Does this sound like a good idea? Do you have ideas of things I could do, or ways to improve the general idea? Sound off in the comments below.
